A group of seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
